ONE OF THE HAYDOM KIDS

This little girl was taking care of her little brother alone while her mother was in the hospital. She loved having her picture taken and seeing it on the screen. Next time I must bring a little battery powered printer so the kids can have pictures of themselves. Most of them have never seen themselves as there are no mirrors and certainly no cameras in their lives. So it is big thrill for them to see a picture of themselves.
OUR LUNCH SPOT

Here is our lunch stop on our way from Arusha to Haydom. This is the town of Mbulu which is the district capital. We received a warm greeting here as everywhere in Tanzania.
AT THE EDGE OF THE GREAT RIFT VALLEY

I am standing on top of the western escarpment of part the Great Rift Valley. In the background is Lake Manyara, an evaporative lake in the Valley. The road up the escarpment was deeply rutted and very rough. We probably averaged 2 mph. But this is the view from the top--quite worth it.
TANZANIA

When I got to Tanzania I landed at Kilamanjaro airport. We then spent a day in Arusha looking at the new hospital-Arusha Lutheran Medical Center. We then headed off by Land Rover to Haydom. The drive is about 250 Km. The first 100Km or so is tarmac and the rest is dirt roads. We were lucky from a driving standpoint that the rains haven't come yet, though you can see from the pictures how dry the land is. The rains are late this year, though we did get a few showers and one big rain when we returned to Arusha, so hopefully the rains will start in earnest.
